On the signing of the new PEPFAR Partnership Framework for HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control, the United Nations in Viet Nam congratulates the continuing commitment of the Government of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam and the Government of the United States of America to reaching universal access to comprehensive HIV services and halting and reversing the epidemic in Viet Nam.

US government support has greatly contributed to national efforts to provide life-saving treatment for people living with HIV and preventing infections among people at higher risk in Viet Nam, especially since the Viet Nam programme of the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) began in 2005.

Within the context of the Government of Viet Nam’s National Strategy on HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control, the United Nations in Viet Nam is firmly committed to supporting implementation of the Partnership Framework in collaboration with the Viet Nam Ministry of Health and the four United States PEPFAR implementing agencies in Viet Nam including the United States Agency for International Development, the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and Department of Defense.

“It is our strong belief that implementation of the Partnership Framework will be a critical element of the wider efforts by Viet Nam to scale up towards universal access to comprehensive HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services, to achieve the Millennium Development Goal of halting and reversing the epidemic by 2015, and to move towards a sustainable national response to HIV,” said Mr. Eamonn Murphy, UNAIDS Viet Nam Country Director and Chair of the United Nations Joint Team on HIV.
