UNAIDS in Viet Nam

UNAIDS’ support to Viet Nam dates back to 1996, the year of establishment of the organization. The formation of the UNAIDS team in Viet Nam started with the arrival of a Country Programme Advisor and the opening of a small office placed at the Ministry of Health, also in 1996.

Since then, UNAIDS has grown both globally and in country as a leader of the response to HIV, and its support to the Government and people of Viet Nam has increased significantly.

UNAIDS has been working with the National Assembly of Viet Nam and the National Committee for AIDS, Drugs and Prostitute Prevention and Control to provide on-going policy advice and technical assistance to the development of a conducive legal framework for HIV related issues, based on sound evidence and the human rights approach.

UNAIDS has supported Viet Nam to introduce innovations in the response to HIV, to enhance and sustain access to critical HIV services for people most in need, to generate greater effectiveness and efficiency of the HIV programme, and to ultimately achieve an optimal national response to HIV towards the ambitious 90-90-90 targets and ending AIDS in Viet Nam.

UNAIDS has also been a key partner for the Government in the coordination of international support to HIV and partnership with civil society working on HIV related issues. International and national partners include the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM), the United States President’s Emergency Programme for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the National Network of People Living with HIV and others.

UNAIDS commits to continue supporting Viet Nam in its efforts to achieve the ambitious targets of 90-90-90, toward ending AIDS as a public health threat in Viet Nam by 2030. Currently, UNAIDS is represented in Viet Nam by a Country Director who provides guidance to a technical team covering areas such as strategic information, strategic interventions, policy and coordination, community mobilisation and networking, and communications.
