The HIV epidemic in Viet Nam comprises many sub-epidemics across the country and remains concentrated primarily among three populations defined by high levels of HIV-transmission risk behaviours: people who inject drugs (PWID), men who have sex with men (MSM) and female sex workers (FSW)1.

Sharing of needles and other injecting equipment among drug users is the single most important mode of transmission in Viet Nam. Sexual transmission of HIV is primarily among people who inject drugs and their regular sexual partners, men who have sex with men, sex workers and their clients, and sex work clients and their regular sex partners. Most women living with HIV report that they were infected by stable sexual partners who either inject drugs or visit sex workers. HIV prevalence among the general population is low and shows no sign of increasing2.
